18. Madd Laazim – Huroof al-Muqatta’aat
20. Full Ghunna Meem and Noon Mushaddad
There are seven letters in this category, as identified in the section covering the Sifaat of letters. These are referred to as ‘elevated’ (Isti’laa) letters, also commonly called full-mouth letters, and sometimes called emphatic letters. The letters are خ ص ض غ ط ق ظ . You can remember these by reading them as خَصَّضَغْطٍقَظْ. This word has no meaning in Arabic but contains the letters together for convenience. These seven letters are also called Tafkheem letters. Tafkheem means thickening or making heavy. In other words, when read, the letters are given the quality of heaviness by elevation of the tongue. They are always read as full-mouth letters.
