18. Madd Laazim – Huroof al-Muqatta’aat
20. Full Ghunna Meem and Noon Mushaddad
Ikhfaa (Hide) – Noon-Saakin and Tanween
The first of the two types of ‘light’ Ghunna relates to 15 letters of Ikhfaa; theseareت ث ج د ذ ز س ش ص ض ط ظ ف ق ك . These letters need to ‘hide’ (Ikhfaa), when read under Noon-Saakin and Tanween conditions. This mean you are effectively hiding the sound of the letter by making a ‘light’ Ghunna sound.
If after نْ (Noon-Saakin) or ً ٍ ٌ (Tanween), an Ikhfaa letter appears, the letter with Noon-Saakin or Tanween has to be read with a ‘light’ Ghunna for two seconds. In other words, here you are almost hiding or minimising the ‘N’ sound. This nasal sound must be distinctly different, being a slightly lower sound than the ‘full’ Ghunna. Examples of light nasal sound include:
وَإِنْ تَغْفِرْ بِجَهَٰلَةٍ ثُمَّ تَابَ بِخَلْقٍ جَدِيدٍ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَآئِقَةُ خَمْسَةٌ سَادِسُهُمْ مِّنْ ضَعْفٍ .
Ikhfaa Shafawiy (Hide) – Meem-Saakin
The second type of ‘light’ Ghunna relates to Ikhfaa Shafawiy, which refers to ‘hiding’ of the letter Meem مْ. In this case the Ghunna sound you have to produce is a light nasal sound. If after مْ (Meem-Saakin) there is the letter ب, read with a ‘light’ Ghunna for two seconds.
Examples of ‘light’ Ghunna resulting from Meem-Saakin are given below:
تَرْمِيْهِمْ بِحِجَارَةٍۢ أَمْ بِهِۦ جِنَّةٌۢ,.
