Many people make mistakes when reciting the Quran. These mistakes are of two types: major لَحْنِ جَلِى (Lahni Jali) and minor لَحْنِ حَفِى (Lahni Khafi). Making a major error is forbidden (Haraam). As for minor errors, these are disliked (Makrooh), and ideally you should make effort to minimise or remove them completely. The emphasis on the removal of mistakes and the correct recitation of the Quran is sharply pointed out in the Jazariyyah, the Tajweed poem:
“The practical application of Tajweed is without doubt compulsory. Who does not read the Quran correctly is a sinner.”
To prevent mistakes, you must only learn from a teacher who knows the rules and can practically demonstrate them through their own recitation. It is not acceptable to ‘learn’ from so-called ‘Quran teachers’ or ‘Tajweed teachers’ who themselves are not able to demonstrate the recitation of the Quran with Tajweed to a high standard. Islam encourages us to strive for excellence (Ihsan), and so you must aspire to recite the Quran to a high standard.
