Detached Madd (Madd Munfasil) is a type of secondary Madd (Madd Far’ee) and is dependent on the presence of Hamza. In detached Madd (Madd Munfasil), the elongation occurs when a word ends in one of the Huroof al Madd letters and the following word begins with a Hamza (ا/ء). In other words, the Madd letter and the Hamza are in separate words instead of being in one – both are ‘detached’. Here the elongation can be two, four or five Harakaat, which means the sound is lengthen by two to five seconds. The term used for this is Tawassut (intermediate). Examples of detached Madd are shown below.
