18. Madd Laazim – Huroof al-Muqatta’aat
20. Full Ghunna Meem and Noon Mushaddad
If before the two Laams in the Glorious Name of Allah there is a letter with either a Fathah or Dhammah, you read it as full-mouth. For example, خَتَمَ اللّٰهُ and عَبْدُ اللّٰهِ . If the letter before the Laam has a Kasra, your read it empty-mouth, as in this example, اللّٰهِ مَرْضَاتِ .
The use of the letter Laam, applied at the beginning of a word as the definite article is referred to as Laam At-ta’reef (لام التعريف). This relates to the two Tajweed rules Idghaam and Izhaar. There are 14 ‘sun’ letters known as Huroof Al-Shamsiyya (ﻥ ﻝ ﻅ ﻁ ﺽ ﺹ ﺵ ﺱ ﺯ ﺭ ﺫ ﺩ ث ﺕ). If a ‘sun’ letter comes after the Laam, it is read with Idghaam, which means to merge without applying the Ghunna. In this case the Lamm is called Laam Shamsiyya. For example, ٱلنَّعِيمِ is read as “An-Naeem” and الرُّوحُ as “Ar-Rooh”. On the other hand, there are 14 ‘moon’ letters, known as Huroof Al-Qamariyya (هـ ﻱ ﻭ ﻡ ﻙ ﻕ ﻑ ﻍ ﻉ ﺥ ﺡ ﺝ ﺏ أ). If a ‘moon’ letter comes after the Laam, it is read with Izhaar (obviousness). The Lamm in this case is called Laam Qamariyya. For example, ٱلْحَجّ is read as “Al-Hajj” and ٱَلْبَيْت as “Al-Bayt”.
