There are 28 letters in the Arabic language. These letters have special and unique characteristics, which must be applied correctly to ensure the Quran is recited accurately and precisely. The 28 letters in the Arabic alphabet are ا ب ت ث ج ح خ د ذ ر ز س ش ص ض ط ظ ع غ ف ق ك ل م ن ه و ى. The details of the specific properties of the letters and how they are applied in practice are discussed in the following sections.
Tajweed means beautifying the reading of the Quran. To apply Tajweed in your recitation, you must pronounce every letter correctly, from its place of origin, applying all its qualities. The place of pronunciation of a letter is called Makhraj. This has been clearly emphasised by the famous scholar Muhammad ibn Al-Jazaree in his poem of Tajweed, the Jazariyyah:
“It is without any doubt required for the reciter to know before starting recitation: The articulation points and characteristics of letters. So that they can articulate in the most eloquent of languages.”
In addition to applying the defined Tajweed rules, every person has the flexibility to apply the natural tone of their voice. The use of the natural tone of your voice can either be a conscious or unconscious decision. You cannot compromise on the application of the Tajweed rules. The priority is to apply the Tajweed rules, however the use of your voice to add extra beautification is optional. Even without applying additional vocal beautification, the correct recitation of the Quran can be achieved with the application of the Tajweed rules. Every reciter can exercise their choice to apply the natural melody of their voice.
According to Al-Jazaree:
“And it (Tajweed) is also a beautification of recitation. And an adornment of pronunciation and reading.”
The aim of applying Tajweed is to make your recitation of the Quran match that of the recitation of Prophet Muhammed (PBUH), as closely as possible. The benefit of reciting the Quran correctly is that you are rewarded in this world and in the Hereafter. There is much that can be said about the importance of reading the Quran with Tajweed. On the Day of Accounting, the Noble Quran will be an intercessor for whoever recites it. The Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) emphasised the importance of reading the Quran correctly and encouraged us by telling us about the abundant benefit it brings.
”Whoever recites a letter from Allah’s Book, then he receives the reward from it, and the reward of ten the like of it. I do not say that Alif Lam Mim is a letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter”. (Sunan At-Tirmizi)
“Read the Quran, for it will come on the Day of Resurrection interceding for its companions”.
(Muslim – 804)
